Block Bounce

Postby tyler » Thu Jul 23, 2009 3:52 am

I wrote a breakout clone with Rubygame and it just hit final1!

If you could play it and tell me what you think (and if you find any bugs) I would really appreciate it.

Thanks! I'm glad y'all like it!

I've been using rubygame for a few months now, though this is my first (almost) complete game using it.

As for the game being just one huge file... It hasn't caused me any problems! yet

If no one's found any bugs yet, I might have to go to beta1 without any changes :D

Nice game. The bounce direction seems a bit odd at times (going the opposite direction I'd expect), but that's the only "bug" I could see. Of course, the game is very simple, so it could use some enhancements, like being able to change options (e.g. turn sound off) without quitting the level, as well as more power-ups, nicer graphics, music, etc. etc. But it's a good start! :)

Thanks! Yeah, the bouncing is a bit odd, but I think it makes things more interesting :D

As for enhancements, I definitely agree the game needs improvement. BUT. Due to the way I make games (basically inspiration-fueled few day sprints every so often) and some bad design decisions when I was initially making the game, its more trouble than its worth to add more stuff.

BTW, I just pushed up the finishing changes to github: level making tutorial, new level loader, new properties editor, 20 total levels, windows binaries. (so I'm done with Block Bounce, for now)

But I figure for my next game I might use gamebox, or my own homebrewed engine that should try to stop me from making bad decisions. :D (and hopefully make it look and act more polished too!)

Thanks for the wonderful library and playing my game, jacius!
