RubyWeekend #3 Game Creation Contest (June 26-28 2009). Theme: "A Tiny World"

Entries (Upload Here) (Closed!)

Postby jacius » Thu Jun 25, 2009 11:59 pm

(Update: Entries are now closed. If you have a late entry, please post it below anyway, but it won't be eligible to win.)

Upload your game entries here!

Please upload your game package (as a zip, tarball, exe, dmg, or whatever) to this thread, even if you're also hosting it elsewhere. That way your awesome game will still be available in the future, even if your site goes down or the URL changes.

It's also good to upload a screenshot (or two) of your game in action, so people can get a preview of what it's like.

Other information that we recommend posting:
  • A brief description of your game
  • How to start it, and what the controls are
  • A list of library dependencies users must have installed
  • A link to a blog post or web page about your game, if you have one
To be eligible to win, entries must be posted before June 29, 01:00 UTC. But, please upload and post your game even if it's a late entry! We'd love to play it. :)

Here's my entry: Ant Frenzy

Description:
It's a really simple game that is somewat related to snake but still very different.
You are the red ant in the middle and your goal is to live as long as possible. You do this by eating the green pellets spread around the playfield. If you don't eat you lose energy. If you lose all your energy the it's game over! If you do eat then new enemies will appear! The enemies are the black ants. One touch from them and it's game over! No worries tho, they aren't very smart. The actual score is how many pellets you ate.

Controls:
UP: Speed up
Down: Slow down
Left: Steer left
Right: Steer right

Music:
Well i couln't find something that could compare to something i found on my harddrive. Everything i found was just meh :/. But you can add your own music by converting it to OGG and calling it music.ogg. You just copy it next to the source(where the images are aswell) and start the game. The music will start once you hit play. I strongly advice to add Nightwish - The Kinslayer :).

How does this follow the theme?
It's an ant game and ants are tiny. If we look a the world of ants it seems tiny. (Atleast for european ants! I know some ants around the world are flippin huge)

License: None, do whateveryou want with it.

Just start main.rb if you run it from source:

Entry for RubyWeekend #3 [http://rubygame.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=38]
Windows: http://ippa.se/a_tiny_world.exe
MAC Intel 10.5+: http://ippa.se/a_tiny_world_intel_mac.zip (Thanks Julian!)

Game
====
Crush the minis and their world!
Bonus for fancy kicks. Don't get bitten in the legs!
Move legs with Arrows. Kick with Space.

Thoughts
========
72 hours was abit long, I wasted 1-2 days in the sun and still started to get bored :p.
48 hours is probably enough.

Chipmunk-tweaking, especially syncing gfx to chipmunk-shapes, was hell and took alot of time.
I need to make a lib that solves this better and automaticly. Preferable via SVG-files.

Win32 Deployment with Ocra [http://github.com/larsch/ocra/tree/master] is cool.

I can't seem to find the perfect way of organizing levels... rubycode? singletonclass? yaml-files?

Actually taking time to work on alot of (easy) details, like simple bloodsplatter and various soundFX, really adds to the final experience.

Requires
========
Gosu: http://www.libgosu.org/
Chipmunk: http://wiki.slembcke.net/main/published/Chipmunk
Texplay: http://banisterfiend.wordpress.com/2008 ... -and-gosu/
(All bundled in the exe)

Droplet

Postby jacius » Sun Jun 28, 2009 11:28 pm

Droplet is more of a toy than a "game", but it's still fun! Click to plant seeds alonge the edges of the droplet, then move the mouse to tickle the plants and make them sing! :D
